A good web site starts with research. Before any code is written or any graphics are designed, proper research should be conducted. This begins with the designer and customer together setting objectives for the web site and planing how to best accomplish them. Many questions should be addressed at this time, such as, What will this web site do, provide information, collect information, sell goods or services or just general promote the business? What keywords should the site be designed around? Does my competition have a web site? A few well spent hours now can and will make all the difference after the site is designed. Now is the time to select the best domain name for your site. It should reflect what you will sell or promote.

Now that we have done our homework it is time to start with the development of the site. In this phase we will decide on the content, how the site will operate, general appearence and the technologies to make the web site function. During this phase it will be important for the designer to have all of the content that the site will use. Generally the company the site is being designed for can provide most of the textual content as well as specific graphics. This effort can save time and money in the design phase. It is also important to determine if any additional talent, such as programmers or graphic artists will be required to accomplish the planed objectives.

Having established objectives and gathered the content, it's time to design the look and feel of the site. Some of the most important considerations are navigation, organization and presentation. All of the content must be formatted so it is easy to find , fast to get to and visually appealing. Remember, a web site can look great but if it takes too long to load or is too confusing to browse, your visitors will move on. Another often overlooked aspect of design is keyword content. If the search engines can not find your site, how will your potential customers find it on the Internet?

Even a simple web site can contain thousands of lines of code and many links that go to pages elsewhere on the Internet. While a lot of the testing can be done in the design phase, it is important to have a final test of the whole site. Designer and owners alike can overlook something that will stand out to a new visitor. Whenever possible, it is a good idea to have other members of your business or family try the web site as well. If a stranger can find ever thing without much trouble, chances are that your average visitor will have little or no problems as well.

Now that we have conducted research, developed, designed and tested our web site, it is time to publish. We send all of the files to their final location on an Internet web server. The next step is to register the site with the search engines that will help visitors find your new site. This is where the selection of a good domain name and proper keywords come into play. With your site up and functioning, it is a good idea to pursue links to and from your site. Try to link from your site to other web pages that provide more supporting information but are not in direct competition for the same visitors. Always ask to have them provide a link back to your site as well. Keep your content up to date and check to see if you can find your site using the popular search engines. A few changes from time to time may be neccessary to keep your site visible to the search engines. Last, always remember to promote your web site by including it in printed materials such as business cards, company letterhead and other advertising mediums.
